“The Man Across The Street”


Would you believe I have been in this nursing home for 20 years? I wonder why I have outlived all my friends. It’s not like I ever prayed for a drawn-out “life-sucking” existence.

Being old is no fun. I have had three strokes and three heart attacks. My doctor reckoned the third heart attack would take me out. He was wrong.

My kids and grandchildren say they are happy I’m still here.

So why did they put me in a home? I hate it here; gathered together with the other old folk.

I want to be cremated like my friends. I want my ashes to be poured into the sea, as were my son’s and my husband’s more than 10 years ago.
